Crisis management expert Regina Phelps notes that in cases like fear of an earthquake can send people to the store stockpiling on items that will surely expire before being eaten.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recommends that Americans maintain a two-week supply of food in case of an emergency. Purchasing more than that means you’re most likely wasting money.
