There is so much childhood nostalgia in having a bowl of frosted flakes on a Saturday morning. But the recipe for frosted flakes is actually rather simple to make.
To make this recipe, here are all the ingredients that you will need:
- ¾ cup cornmeal
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon vanilla
- ½ cup milk
- ¼ cup cornmeal
- ¼ cup 10x (powdered sugar)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 2 tablespoons confectioner’s sugar for final dusting
Here are the instructions to make homemade frosted flakes:
First, you will need to heat the oven to 350 degrees. Then, lightly grease a baking sheet.
In a large bowl, you will need to stir together the ¾ cup cornmeal, sugar, cornstarch and salt. Mix together until everything is well combined. Then, add the milk and vanilla extract to the bowl, stirring until the batter is completely smooth.
Next, pour the batter onto the prepared baking sheet and carefully spread the mixture out evenly. There should be a nice thin layer, which is about 1/4 – 1/3″ thick.
Next, ina large bowl, you need to combine all of the remaining cornmeal, 10x (powdered sugar), sugar and milk and mix. Continue mixing everything together until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Finally, sprinkle the top of the breadcrumb batter in the prepared pan with the cornmeal crumbs. This adds the crunchy texture of the cereal. Then, sprinkle the remaining 10x across the whole surface of the batter.
Next, bake the pan on the center rack of the oven for 15 minutes. Don’t walk away from the oven at this stage, since you need to check the pan for the doneness of the frosted flakes. When the dough has become golden brown, dried out and cracked it is ready to come out of the oven.
Remove the pan from oven and lower the heat to 250F. Let the pan cool, then use your hands to tear and crack the dough into small flakes. Return to the oven and bake for 45 minutes or until pieces are toasted, crisp, and golden.
