Tortilla chips and dip are a classic snack to have any time. They can be bought in big bags and different sizes or with different chip shapes. However, these chips can also be eaten in one sitting.
Tortilla chips can also be pretty easy to make from just a few ingredients. Here are the ingredients you will need to make homemade tortillas.
- 2 cups vegetable oil
- 6 tortillas (can be either flour or corn)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Salt for seasoning chips
Here are the directions to make these homemade tortillas.
First, compile all of your ingredients together before you begin. Then you will need to heat the one cup oil in a heavy-bottomed pan on the stove. Next, cut each tortilla into 6 triangle-shaped wedges. Place them to the side once all of the tortillas have been cut.
Next, heat the oil on medium-high heat, about 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You will know the oil is hot enough when a small piece of tortilla placed in the oil sizzles. (You can also use a thermometer to check the temperature if you have one.
If the small tester piece of tortilla browns too quickly, the oil is too hot. Remove the pan from heat to let the oil cool a bit before continuing. It’s better to have the oil a bit too low on heat, then too high. The tortillas will not cook properly.
Next, place a paper towel onto a large plate to place the fried tortillas on when finished. Also, have several other paper towels ready. Place a handful of tortilla triangles into the hot oil, in a single layer.
It’s important to pay attention and not walk away from the stove at this point. Use metal tongs or a metal slotted spoon to distribute the tortilla triangles so that they aren’t overlapping and so that all sides get coated with oil. You can fry the tortillas in batches if necessary.
Fry each piece for approximately 2 minutes until the chips just begin to color and they are firm, no longer pliable. Move chips to the paper-towel-lined plate, using the tongs or a spoon to remove the chips from the oil carefully.
Finally, sprinkle with salt while the tortilla chips are still hot. Place another paper towel over the top of the chips to be ready for the next batch. This makes sure they will not stick together while the chips are still warm.
